Fishermen haul in funds to help Tiffany
step closer to reality recently.
Her Heritage International Trust Fund plan was paid up through a generous donation from a group of fishermen.
Tiffany's father, Mr. Joseph Douglas, died earlier this year. Mr. Douglas was a diesel technician and worked on several of the fishermen's boats which are moored in Burchall's Cove.
At his passing the members of the Burchall's Cove Fisherman's group organised a "Big Mac'' fishing tournament in his honour and donated the proceeds and a family portrait to Mrs. Douglas who said: "It's a special tribute in memory of my late husband. The outpouring of love from them is just tremendous.'' Mr. Dennis DeShields, president of the group, and one of the tournament's organisers, said the idea for the September 4 tournament had been talked about for a long time.
"Every fisherman there (Burchall's Cove) wanted to have a tournament. When Mr. Douglas died we decided to put this together to contribute to his family.
"Everyone got involved. The response was immediate. Over 22 boats and 500 people took part. We are looking to make this an annual event.
"I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our sponsors for all their help. Without them none of this would have been possible.'' Mr. Winston Jones, the enrollment director for the Heritage International Scholarship, said the donation will make available additional US dollar funds to further assist Mrs. Douglas meet the costs of her daughter's post-secondary education. He estimates the cost to be around $100,000 by the time Tiffany is ready for college.
He had high praise for the community effort that went into organising the tournament.
"This is a wonderful thing that these fishermen have done,'' he said. "They have given her something tangible. When her family needs it the money will be there to meet her expenses.
"At Heritage we are excited and quite honoured that the Heritage Foundation was selected for this award.''
