AG mum on Cleansweep QC

ERROR RG P4 17.7.1997 A story in yesterday's paper incorrectly stated that the English lawyer to be flown in to prosecute Operation Cleansweep cases in Supreme Court is a QC.

Attorney General Elliott Mottley yesterday confirmed that an English Queen's Counsel will be flown in to prosecute Operation Cleansweep cases in Supreme Court.

But Mr. Mottley had little details on the visiting lawyer.

"Somebody is coming in to prosecute some of the cases,'' he told The Royal Gazette when contacted. "I can't tell you offhand when he is coming, you'll have to speak to the Police.'' Police, however, said the matter was one for the Attorney General's Chambers.

Mr. Mottley also said he could not disclose whether the QC will receive a weekly four-figure salary and stay in a Hamilton guest property, as rumoured.

QC to prosecute Cleansweep cases "I can't tell you,'' he said when asked. "I don't pay attention to these things. These are matters which I don't deal with on a day-to-day basis. All I can tell you is somebody's coming in from England to prosecute because of the nature of the case. A person who would have prosecuted that type of case.'' More than 20 people were arrested last month and charged in connection with the unprecedented drug sting operation in which undercover US Drug Enforcement Agents videotaped alleged drug transactions. And close to half of them have opted for Supreme Court trials.

The alleged deals ranged in value from $25 to $100 and occurred mainly in Warwick and the Broome Street area of Sandys Parish in April and May.
