On December 1, the House of Assembly approved the purchase of the 0.25-acre site for $325,000, but only after a heated debate in which Opposition MPs charged Government was paying an inflated price because the land was owned by a powerful white person.

After the House debate, Works & Engineering Minister Leonard Gibbons told The Royal Gazette the land on South Road was owned by a member of the Trimingham family, but he did not know which one.

Mr. Gibbons said the land -- on the southwest corner of St. Michael's Road between Trimingham's and Modern Mart -- had been privately appraised at $400,000 in 1993.

Also today, the Senate is scheduled to debate the USA-Bermuda Tax Convention (Section 10) Regulations 1995; The Government Fees Amendment (No. 2) Regulations 1995; The Civil Airports Landing Fees and Validation Act 1995; and a small property purchase for a bus shelter in Southampton.
