"heroically charged'' and overpowered a man threatening to kill chasing Policemen.

At about 1 p.m. yesterday, Police went to the junction of Reid and Burnaby Street following reports that a man was carrying a machete. He ran off when Police arrived and was chased to Queen Street.

A Police spokesman said: "He was cornered on Front Street, near the Birdcage, where he apparently raised the machete and threatened to kill the pursuing officers.

"An off-duty Police officer, who had joined the chase, heroically charged the offender and was hit on the shoulder with the machete.'' He was not injured although his clothing was ripped. The Police said a 56-year-old Pembroke man will be appearing in court in due course.

Police investigating an armed robbery confirmed last night that several people had been questioned in connection with the crime.

On Sunday evening an armed robber escaped with almost $600 from the Bermuda Industrial Union Gas Station firing three shots during the incident.

Last night a Police spokesman said: "A number of people have been questioned in connection with the matter. But we are not prepared to confirm whether any arrests have been made.''
