Globalstar names new director of business development operations

Globalstar LP, a international consortium developing a 48 satellite-based mobile telecommunications network, yesterday named Mr. Reid Stephenson as new director of business development operations.

Bermuda-registered Globalstar Telecommunications Ltd. owns 21.3 percent of the San Jose-based limited partnership.

Mr. Stephenson, a US citizen working out of the company's San Jose offices, is responsible for marketing and business planning operations, tariff structures, licensing and franchise operations and liaison with Globalstar partners and service providers worldwide.

Prior to joining Globalstar, Mr. Stephenson was managing director of Asia/Pacific business operations for Iridium, Inc., the Motorola-led international consortium that is competing with Globalstar in the field of wireless communications, said Bloomberg Business News.

Previously, he was with Sprint International for eight years as well as Apple Computer.

Globalstar was founded by Loral Corp. and QUALCOMM Inc.

Globalstar will offer telephone and other digital telecommunications services to areas currently under served or not served by existing wireless and cellular communications systems.

The first Globalstar satellites will be launched in 1997 with service to start in 1998.

GTL went public on February 23 and is listed on NASDAQ.
