Saltus retain one, lose another
Girls' Interschool Hockey Tournament held recently.
The Junior Division saw Saltus seize the championship for the third straight year, but had only a superior goal difference separating them from runners-up BHS. Warwick Academy and Northlands occupied the next two places as the competition provided much drama and excitement.
In the end, however, it was the experience and attacking play of Saltus, led by captain Caroline Black, that set them apart as they went undefeated throughout.
Opening with a 3-0 victory over Northlands they had the charge momentarily halted by BHS during a 0-0 draw, but resumed their high scoring ways in beating Warwick 5-0.
Ana Anton of Saltus ended as the tournament's leading scorer with four goals in three matches.
Among the Senior Division, BHS were successful in turning the tide on defending champions Saltus on a day when rain ruled the pitch, making for tough going.
BHS announced their intentions early with 1-0 and 2-0 triumphs over Warwick and Northlands respectively.
The pressure proved too intense for Saltus as they drew 0-0 against Northlands in their opening encounter despite dominating the game and although they came alive with a 4-0 victory over Warwick, a 0-0 draw against BHS in the deciding contest assured the latter the title.
Persistent rain curtailed much of the weekend action in the Bermuda Ladies Hockey Association with only two matches being played.
In the lone A League match a spirited Longtails frustrated Cardinals throughout and forced a share of the spoils with a 0-0 draw.
The favoured Cardinals had the better of the opportunities but were unable to capitalise. This frustration eventually led to Cardinals player Verkaaik being suspended as her temper got the best of her during a confrontation with the umpire.
With the draw Cardinals gave PHC Canaries hope for the title as the latter have two games in hand with the title chase heading down to the wire.
Meanwhile, in the B league a stick tackle by a Bluebirds defender that resulted in a penalty stroke conversion by Lisa Ray to give Orioles a 1-0 win.
The keenly contested fixture saw most of the play taking place between the 25 yard area but with few shots on goal.
Bluebirds almost found themselves two goals down when they conceded another penalty stroke only to have the goalkeeper rise to the occasion in making a vital save.
