Lister: Gary come back

news of Gary Darrell's resignation as Bermuda's national coach.

He went as far as to urge Darrell to return to the position provided certain "changes are made within the Bermuda Football Association coaching set-up.'' Darrell's intent to resign was made public yesterday almost a week after his letter was received by the Bermuda Football Association and just after the national team's involvement in the World Cup ended with a scoreless draw against Canada.

The coach has been subject to criticism from many circles since Bermuda's second round World Cup qualifiers took a turn for the worse when they lost three successive away matches. The most recent criticisms have come from star striker Shawn Goater.

"The Bermuda team has performed admirably over the past several years, not just the past six months,'' said Lister, "and while much credit has to be given to the players, even more credit must be given to Mr. Darrell.'' Lister added: "Bermuda has had the benefit of a full-time contribution from a part-time coach.

"We, the country, must reflect back to the time when Mr. Darrell took on the role of the national coach. At that time many of the better players had no interest in representing their country. Gary has changed all that. Today players are fighting for the opportunity of representing Bermuda.'' It is believed that the BFA is looking into hiring a full-time overseas coach.

Lister, however, is against that.

"I believe the BFA must do a full review and analyse what has happened over the past 12 months and then decide if, in fact, there are changes which need to be made within the BFA coaching set-up which will enable Mr. Darrell to come back and continue the brilliant run that we are all proud of.''
