Adderley slams Government `hypocrisy' on oversized cars

Shadow Transport Minister Erwin Adderley has hit out at what he described as Government hypocrisy on oversized cars.

He said claims by Transport Minister Dr. Ewart Brown that he was going to crack down on vehicles imported that were outside of the legal size rules, were the epitome of hypocrisy and arrogance.

Mr. Adderley said after all the controversy over larger than usual cars being allowed for Government Ministers, they were now creating elitism by stopping anybody else having one.

"He allowed Ministers to have the cars in the public interest but it is not in the public interest for the general public to have some sort of relaxation, particularly dealing with cars that are already on the Island,'' he said.

"It is another example of arrogance and opportunity to create elitism in Bermuda. It is "I am alright Jack, pull up the ladder''.''.

Dr. Brown announced that the law would be strictly enforced against oversized cars.

He said dealers had imported cars, longer and wider than allowed, and sold them to an unsuspecting public. In addition, he said Transport Control Department staff had not always been consistent in applying the rules.
