Shore on Monday night could have been a meteorite.

A Harbour Radio spokesman told The Royal Gazette that numerous reports of a flare being sighted off South Shore were called in at around 9.30 p.m. He said an all-ship emergency broadcast was issued and two ships responded.

The bulk carrier Sky Hope's first officer said the ship was about 100 miles north of the Island when he saw a light in the sky. He told Harbour Radio that the light could not have come from a flare because it did not go up into the sky and then down like a flare would, it only came down from very high in the sky. He said he believed it was a meteorite.

The Hebron Sea's first officer said he was 150 miles south of the Sky Hope and he had seen a flare to the west.

He told Harbour Radio he could not confirm that it had been a meteorite.

The Harbour Radio spokesman said no other responses had come in and no marine vessels had been reported missing.

A National Aeronautics and Space Administration spokesman said the station at Cooper's Island had not tracked "anything like that'' on Monday night.
