Morgan stumbles, but still qualifies

higher yesterday to finish in second place among the qualifiers in the 64th Bermuda Women's Amateur Match Play Championships yesterday at Mid Ocean.

Morgan of Bermuda led Hannah Steel by three strokes after the first of two qualifying rounds. And even though Steel was seven strokes worse than her first round 77, Morgan's second round was even more disappointing, shooting an 89 to finish two strokes behind medallist Steel, 161 to 163.

Both, however, are through to the championship round of eight starting today, when Morgan will play Susan Duffy, who had rounds of 82 and 84 to finish fifth among the qualifiers. Steel will meet another visitor, Helen Stovell, while defending champion Lisa Griffin will take on Louise Munro. The other championship match today will see Bonnie Tyler playing Lee Ann Vogel.

Unlike Monday when two players, Morgan and Steel, broke 80, the best round yesterday was Vogel's 81 which was an improvement on her first round by three strokes.

Tyler was consistent with two rounds of 82 while local resident Shirley Wildi carded an 83, as did Munro. Wildi missed out on a place in the championship round by a single stroke, that last spot going to Munro, though she will not cherish the prospect of playing the defending champion.
