concerned with what they study but with getting an education.

And the broader an educational background, the better, he added.

Like many of the popular business-related professions on the Island, many students are venturing abroad to specialise in computer-related areas rather than pursue a liberal arts degree.

But Mr. Strenk pointed out that students could get the breadth of a liberal arts education first and then take courses to learn the necessary skills for their chosen field.

He noted that many people in the computer field have diverse educational backgrounds as majors in computer science did not exist when they were in school.

"People looking to hire in the field of computers are looking for students who have the education and are not concerned with the type of major the person is pursuing,'' he said.

Simply having an education indicated that the person had the ability to learn, he noted.

And he added that computer companies were not even concerned that potential employees had an education in computers, although a minor in a computer-related area was helpful.

Computer companies looking to hire were seeking well-rounded backgrounds and diverse majors were appreciated, said Mr. Strenk.
