to his drug habit again -- an $850 fine.

Burt had been caught by Police with .08 grammes of heroin in Angle Street, Pembroke, Magistrates' Court heard.

Acting Magistrate the Wor. Mark Diel fined him after rejecting a plea by his lawyer, Mr. Peter Farge, for a social inquiry report.

Mr. Diel said Burt had been in the hands of probation officers before, but to no avail.

Burt, 30, of Court Street, admitted possessing heroin. The allegation he intended it for supply was dropped.

Prosecutor Sgt. Kenrick James said the incident occurred on November 19 last year.

Police narcotics officers spotted Burt riding a pedal cycle, and became suspicious because he appeared nervous.

As they followed him, Burt quickly got off his bike, but was caught and found to have a white substance in his jacket pocket, said Sgt. James.

He added the substance, wrapped in 19 foils, was heroin with a street value of $475.

Mr. Farge said Burt had had a drug problem before, but his last conviction was in 1991.

And since then he had "turned his life around'' and found respectable employment.

Mr. Farge recommended a social inquiry report, adding: "I think he does need help.''
