The American Airlines Airbus 300, which was en route from Boston to San Juan, landed at the Bermuda International Airport at 10.49 a.m. where an ambulance was waiting.
The man, who is believed to be aged about 70 and suffering from terminal cancer, was taken to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where he was sedated.
The Airbus was grounded for about 90 minutes before taking off again.
The sick man, who is thought to have been travelling with his brother-in-law, was put on a later flight to continue his journey home to San Juan.
