Chief officers were angered that the newspaper broke the exclusive story last week, naming Insp. Stuart Crockwell and P.c. Dwayne Leverock as the focus of two different inquiries.

We revealed that the case file against Insp. Crockwell was closed last month with no action taken, after the former head of the Task Force was accused of taking cash from two Police safes. All the money was said to have been returned.

Internal discipline officers are now probing the dealings of P.c. Leverock, alleged to have fixed traffic tickets for money during his time in the Police Prosecutions' department.

P.c. Leverock was transferred from his post in Prosecutions to a uniformed position at Hamilton Police Station.

Police have refused to comment on either inquiry but a spokeswoman said last night: "Police have launched an internal investigation as to the leak.''
