Ship fire finally out

DOVER, England (AP) -- A blaze on board the cargo ship Ever Decent was finally extinguished on Monday, nearly a week after the vessel caught fire after colliding with a cruise ship.

More than one million tons of water from four tugboats and two salvage ships was pumped over the Tawainese-owned cargo vessel after the blaze sparked by the collision with the luxury cruise liner Norwegian Dream (the former Dreamward ), which took place on August 24.

Investigators have not yet determined what caused the collision in good weather in a tightly controlled shipping lane.

Twenty-eight of the 1,726 passengers and crew aboard the cruise ship were injured.

More than 40 of the cargo ship's 3,092 containers held "hazardous'' materials, including paint and paint hardener.
