Breast cancer education week
be the guest speaker at a Breast Cancer Education Week public forum on Friday night.
The New York City-based mammography and ultrasound specialist also heads the American Cancer Society's Task Force on Breast Cancer.
Research shows the breast cancer mortality rate could be reduced by at least 30 percent if women followed breast cancer screening guidelines, according to the Government Health Promotions Department, sponsoring the week.
Dr. Brown will speak about breast cancer and a question and answer period will follow in which local physician Dr. Marion Watlington will take part.
The forum takes place at 7.30 p.m. at St. Paul's Christian Education Centre on Middle Road in Paget.
During the week, which started yesterday and runs through Friday, there will also be daily walk-in meetings at noon in Cathedral Hall where people can obtain information on early detection, prevention and treatment of breast cancer.
The slate of local speakers at the lunchtime meetings (from today, in order) includes Mrs. Susan Kessaram of the Breast Feeding Resource Centre and Mrs.
Lena Ostroff of the LaLeche League, lingerie boutique owners Mrs. Ann Smith Gordon who also heads PALS and Mrs. Joyce Hayden, Dr. Terrence Elliott and Dr.
Watlington on the surgical aspects of breast cancer, Dr. Brown and others on chemotherapy and radiation.
