Man arrested in high-speed chase
down by an alleged drunk driver -- a 33-year-old Warwick man who will appear in Magistrates' court this morning.
The incident happened at 3 a.m. on Saturday as two female officers were conducting routine vehicle checks on the Middle Road in Southampton. According to Police, the blue warning light on their car was left on as the officers dealt with a motorcyclist in a layby area.
While doing this, Police heard a speeding car travelling in their direction.
The driver was signalled to stop and reportedly swerved into the layby at the last minute, colliding with the stationary cyclist and striking him on the leg.
Police say the car driver then sped away from the scene. Officers gave chase and caught up with the man at Evans Bay in Southampton.
They report the man became hostile, appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, and that he had several bottles of liquor in his car. As they tried to arrest him he became violent and a person passing by had to intervene to help officers make the arrest.
Police say the man was taken to the Hamilton Police Station where he refused to provide a sample of his breath for analysis.
