Elizabeth Riley, of Mount Road, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court to using false pretences to get credit from a taxi driver.

Prosecutor Sgt. John Dale said Riley caught a taxi from Devonshire to St.

George's on the evening of July 17.

When the taxi stopped, the meter showed that Riley owed $17.80, Sgt. Dale said. But Riley got out of the car and threw a dollar on the seat.

She told the taxi driver she did not have any more money and that he would have to get the money the next day.

The taxi driver followed Riley to her house, repeatedly asking for the money.

But Riley repeated that he would have to wait until the next day.

Sgt. Dale said the driver reported the matter to a taxi dispatcher who called the Police.

The meter reading had increased to $32.20 when Police arrived at Riley's residence.

Police noted that Riley smelled strongly of intoxicants and her speech was slurred.

And when they asked her to pay the fare, she refused and was taken to St.

George's Police Station.

But yesterday, Riley denied throwing the dollar in the taxi seat. And she said she would "never disrespect a taxi driver like that''.

"I was willing to pay it,'' Riley told Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis. "He just took everything the wrong way.'' Mr. Francis told Riley taxi drivers should not have to put up with people who get into taxis without money.

He ordered Riley to pay a $100 fine, of which $32.20 was to be paid to the taxi driver as compensation.
