"I have no objection to it,'' Mr. Elliott Mottley told The Royal Gazette .

Mr. Mottley said he had recently met Bermuda's new Police Commissioner Mr.

Colin Coxall.

And the subject of Police using videos and tapes to record detaining suspects and interviewing them had been discussed.

"It was one of a number of matters we spoke about. As I see it, it is a development in the process of criminal investigation, and is something which certainly must be looked at.'' Mr. Mottley said the matter was being examined.

Recording of Police interviews was a key recommendation in Judge Stephen Tumim's report on Bermuda's criminal justice system.

Mr. Tumim, Chief Inspector of Prisons in England and Wales, said such recordings would make the Police more accountable.

His report stated: "With reference to the enforcement of law, it is important that Police methods of interviewing and detaining members of the public should be open to scrutiny.

"The Police and Criminal Evidence Act in the UK provides, within the context of an independent prosecution system, a structure which governs Police involvement with the public so as to make the Police accountable for their actions.

"We believe that the principles underlying this legislation should apply in Bermuda.'' Mr. Elliott Mottley
