Dunlp's petition is a flop
Andrew Bascome in the national squad has failed to attract support.
Dunlop admitted to having attracted a miserly 60 signatures by last Thursday's deadline after pointing to over 5,000 as a criterion for presenting it to the Bermuda Football Association.
"Basically it just didn't fly,'' said Dunlop. "I didn't get the support I thought I could have.
"But still my sentiment and conviction remains. I don't think a player of (Bascome's) magnitude should have been left out.'' A lack of media coverage by local television was partially blamed for Dunlop's inability to garner sufficient support. He felt that the lack of it left the public unaware of what he was trying to do.
Initially he said that the response to his proposal had been quite promising following a letter to the Sports Mailbox .
This prompted him to take it a step further.
"I still feel he should be included,'' insisted Dunlop. "Since we now have nothing to lose and are playing for pride we could insert him and see what he can do...and if he might have made a difference.
"He has a lot to offer even outside of the playing sphere. He's one of our better coaching minds as well.'' Taking a look to the future Dunlop expressed a need for a restructuring of the entire programme.
"We need to evaluate further and look at what we can do to better the national programme.
"I'm hoping that we develop from here and see what it would take to get us there (in the World Cup finals).
"It would not be advisable to continue as we went this time. We need to maximise out future chances based on experience and the lessons learned.''
