Magistrate wants probe on man who slapped ex-girlfriend

A social inquiry report has been ordered into the family life of a man who slapped the mother of his children and had a metal baseball bat when Police arrested him.

Sergio Augustus, 23, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to slapping his ex-lover and to being in possession of an offensive weapon.

Augustus told the court that he had been frustrated because his former girlfriend had left him. He said he thought he heard a man?s voice during a phone conversation, adding: ?I asked her not to bring a man to my house. I was frustrated and had not been able to let things go and that day, I just exploded.?

Acting Senior Magistrate Carlisle Greaves asked Augustus who had ended the relationship and he said: ?She left me because I was cheating and lying to her.?

Mr. Greaves said: ?We have been doing that for hundreds of years. The women are getting even, not getting back at us.?

Crown counsel Anthony Blackman said Augustus had a metal baseball bat with him on the night in question, although he did not use it. Augustus had asked his ex-girlfriend to get out of the car and when she did not he reached in and slapped her across the face.

Augustus said that he was now in parenting classes and was getting help for his alcoholism from (BARC) Bermuda Assessment and Referral Clinic.

Mr. Greaves released him on $500 bail and ordered a social inquiry report and a victim impact statement, before sentencing.

Homeowner leads police to housebreaker

Police are crediting a woman for her help in leading to the arrest of a man caught breaking into a house in Southampton.

The woman ? who isn?t being named since an investigation is ongoing ? became suspicious when she spotted a 27-year-old man looking into parked vehicles at Port Royal Primary School on Church Road in Southampton. She then followed him until he parked his cycle and entered a home.

The woman telephoned Police and when the man exited the premises he was quickly arrested. Another man was also nabbed on the scene.

Police seek witnesses for accident, shoplifting

Police are looking for witnesses into a single-vehicle accident on Kindley Field Road in St. George?s last week.

A 44-year-old Hamilton Parish man turned over his car at about 6.20 a.m. on January 22 on Stonecrusher Corner and suffered fractured ribs and a concussion.

Anyone with information is asked to telephone W.P.c. Wade at the St. George?s Police Station on 297-1122. A thief stole jackets and a rain suit from the English Sports Shop this week.

A Police spokesman said the man, who wore khaki trousers and a dark long-sleeved top, arrived in the shop and left with the goods a few minutes later.

He is described as being dark skinned, of slim build, about five feet, ten inches tall, with a close haircut and a short beard.
