A 17-year-old Southampton youth who led Police on a high-speed chase was on Friday ordered to pay a total of $850 in fines.

Rawn Warner, of Turtle Drive, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court to driving while disqualified, driving in a dangerous manner, fraudulent use of documents, no third party insurance, and having an unlicensed vehicle.

Police prosecutor Sgt. John Dale said Police spotted Warner near Barnes Corner with a passenger on a cycle on July 2 at 12.20 a.m.

Warner led a group of five cycles in a pack race along Middle Road in Southampton, Sgt. Dale said.

"He was seen to turn his headlights off and cycle away from the group. He turned on to Tribe Road Number Three at a high speed,'' Sgt. Dale added. "He tried to elude Police by driving onto the railway trail.

"At Spice Hill Road he lost control and drove off the road into the bushes. A foot chase then ensued through private property.'' Warner was caught there and Po lice found that the cycle he was riding had a 77.7 cc engine, but the cycle had a licence for a V50.

Warner's lawyer Mr. Michael Scott said his client did not put the engine into the bike, but bought it second hand with more powerful engine already in it.

But Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis asked Warner: "Why did you buy a motorcycle before you were able to ride it?'' Warner replied: "So I could ride it when I was 18.'' Mr. Francis fined Warner $150 for disqualified driving, $300 for dangerous driving, $100 for fraudulent use of a licence plate, $200 for no third party insurance, and $100 for having an unlicensed vehicle.
