With a PLP victory already looming on the horizon by the time the constituency's final count was completed, Mr. Barritt offered a low-key reaction to his own personal success.

"Any joy and satisfaction I feel with Mr. Dunkley in having topped the polls tonight is tempered by the loss of some of my colleagues. It would appear,'' he added, "that we have run counter to the trend.'' Mr. Dunkley, adopted as UBP candidate for Devonshire South in May of last year, when former Premier Dr. David Saul stepped down, echoed a similar sentiment.

"I feel very happy that Mr. Barritt and I were able to gain the confidence of our constituents but I am disappointed that our leader, Pam Gordon, and the rest of the team were unable to pull through tonight.'' Both victors, who vowed to continue to work for the constituency, voiced their thanks for the steadfast support they had received from UBP supporters in Devonshire South.

"We have all worked extremely hard,'' said Mr. Dunkley, "and Mr. Barritt and I will continue to work hard to justify the faith that has been placed in us.

We will continue to be available, accessible and accountable.'' Well known fishermen leader Danny Farias (659 votes) made his second, unsuccessful bid for the PLP, but remained cheerful throughout.

"I have really enjoyed this experience,'' he said. "I've been in my glory today, greeting all the voters. We've had nice cool weather and a splash of rain. It's exhilarating -- like being on the ocean, standing to my gunwale, trying to catch a fish!'' Quinton Butterfield, also making his first bid on the political scene for the PLP, and polling 603 votes, voiced his disappointment.

"I expected to get more votes than I did, but it's been a tremendous experience. I made a few errors but it's been a great learning experience.

Next time, I shall be more efficient and more proficient. But I did see some interesting trends and I believe there was a slight swing through split votes.
