Burland links up with UK company

Ltd., is set to team up with one of Britain's largest and most respected construction firms with a view to bringing the required expertise to future building projects.

BCM Holdings Ltd. have indicated their intention to partner with the 130-year old Sir Robert McAlpine Ltd., to form BCM McAlpine Ltd.

An application is currently before the Registrar of Companies.

A spokesman at Burland noted that the two companies had been involved in negotiations with a view toward participating in the building of the Bermuda Financial Centre project.

The contract was given to another firm, but just last week, BFCL president, the Hon. Michael Winfield, in announcing a decision, said: "I would also like to thank the other finalist company, Burland, Conyers and Marirea and Sir Robert McAlpine Limited of the U.K. who produced an excellent concept and demonstrated their significant professionalism in construction.'' The spokesman said: "As a result of the negotiations, we formed a pretty good relationship and we have decided to draw on McAlpine's extensive experience with the possibility of collaborating on future projects.'' Burland's competitors have already taken such a step. Sealand has been working with a Danish company and D&J is working with a US company.

The spokesman noted: "When the construction activity tapered off, a lot of expatriate workers with certain skills returned home. Any major projects would require that type of expertise.

"One of the many significant benefits to being involved with a company such as McAlpine is that when we need to import such labour, they will know how to get people who would be able to fit in.'' Sir Robert McAlpine Ltd. is also experienced with a number of construction issues, including expertise in modern construction methods.
