Bromby in `dream start' at Bacardi
Bacardi Cup Regatta currently taking place in Miami, Florida with a first place finish in the opening race and a 12th the next time out.
The combined results put Bromby and crew Lee White second overall just behind Britain's Glynn Charles after the opening day -- the competition started a day late due to a lack of wind on Sunday. Charles had a fourth and second on the day.
Third through fifth were occupied by Americans Kyle Morns, Chris Brun and Howard Shiebler.
"I would rate our first race as the best I've ever sailed,'' said Bromby, whose highest previous final placing has been a seventh two years ago with Paul Fisher as crew.
"Things couldn't be much better, we've had a dream start thus far.'' Bromby leads `sailing superstars' Paul Cayard (31st) of America's Cup fame as well as world champion Joe Londrigan (10th) and Mark Reynolds (39th), the reigning Olympic champ.
Also, the Bermudian earned the right to have his name engraved on the Lockwood Pirie Perpetual Trophy, an honour bestowed on the opening race winner each year.
Bromby put his early success down to the minor adjustments made to the Star craft in the days preceding the competition.
"We're having good speed upwind and downwind so I'm happy with that, as it was a problem during our last regatta,'' explained Bromby, before setting of for an NBA basketball game between Miami Heat and Boston Celtics.
The first race, under light eight to 10 knot breezes, saw Bromby get off to a good start where he was seventh at the first windward mark and followed this by overtaking five boats on the next run to position himself in second going around the leeward mark.
Setting his sights on leader Cayard, Bromby easily made up necessary ground during the next beat and by the finish had stretched to a lead of several boat lengths.
A sudden wind shift combined with a bad read early in the second race held up Bromby's progress and at one point witnessed the local struggling in the middle of the 65 boat fleet.
He would recover nicely, however, and in the end was satisfied with 12th.
Today has the third of the seven race series being sailed out of the Coral Reef Yacht Club in Key Biscane.
