Government House confirmed last night that a candidate had accepted the post and it is expected today to reveal that it is Mr. Tokunbo.

The announcement brings to an end a nine month search for a DPP which has been held up by controversy.

The Foreign Office in London was about to approve Mr. Tokunbo in the post in October last year.

Tokunbo accepts DPP job But the appointment was delayed when the British Government sent a lawyer from London to review the handling of the assault case against former Progressive Labour Party candidate Rodney Smith following allegations of interference from the Attorney General's Chambers.

John Roberts QC found the case had not been handled in the customary way and that contact took place between the AG's Chambers and Smith which left officers open to suspicion.

But he found no proof of manipulation for political reasons or to give Smith an advantage.

In January, Governor Thorold Masefield ordered the selection panel in Bermuda to review its nomination in light of Dr. Roberts' findings, and it again backed Mr. Tokunbo.

It is not clear why Mr. Tokunbo has waited ten days to accept the post, but Government House has made it known that it wants to call on the services of someone with DPP experience to advise the new DPP when needed.

Deputy Governor Tim Gurney said last night: "I can confirm that a candidate has accepted the post of DPP.

"We are still working on getting someone with DPP experience to provide the DPP with any assistance he may require.''
