workers unfairly dismissed, a Minister said.

The move comes in the wake of criticism of Bermuda's employment legislation which lawyers claimed was 20 years out of date.

Although a code of practice exists covering wrongful dismissal there is nothing covering any unfair sackings.

The new Minister for Home Affairs, the Hon. Quinton Edness, said Government had set out of code of ethics covering industrial relations which would be discussed at the next Parliamentary session.

"There is concern for the protection of workers who are not unionised or under a contract and the Government is moving towards trying to have a whole range of procedures that will protect them,'' he said.

Last week, lawyer Miss Elizabeth Christopher said there was no safety net for workers unfairly dismissed saying it was an issue that needed to be properly legislated.

She said that Bermudian employees were presently protected from wrongful dismissal under common law that binds employers to written contracts, but there was no statutory legislation governing unfair dismissal.

"I am concerned about unfair dismissal,'' said Mr. Edness. "I am interested in looking further into this and seeing whether or not we can do something more tangible,'' added Mr. Edness.
