Astwood leads by example

Bermuda to a third straight gross title in the 14th Ladies International Invitational Golf tournament at the Summerlea Golf Club in Quebec, Canada, on the weekend.

Bermuda won the Balandra Cup as low gross champions, having led the division on each of the three days. After day two they held a 17-stroke lead over Southeast Florida, which increased to a substantial 22 strokes at the end of the third round, 721 to 743. Ocean Reef finished third on 756.

Bermuda completed a good tournament by finishing third in the net division.

After the second day, they were only behind winners Ocean Reef and held a four-stroke advantage over Summerlea. But Summerlea made up the difference and pipped Bermuda by two strokes to finish second overall on 640. Ocean Reef had a winning total of 631, which earned them the Bermuda Bowl as net winners.

Astwood, who won the gross title in 1990 before losing her crown to Sharon Pauley of Southeast Florida last year, finished on 232 from rounds of 77, 76 and 79 as she regained the Kitty Michael Founders Trophy. Michael, who died in May, will be honoured next year when the 1992 tournament will be renamed the Kitty Michael International Ladies Golf Tournament. The event is scheduled for Guadeloupe at the end of May.

Astwood, playing off a six handicap, won the first low gross prize with team-mate Pat Morgan the gross winner on the second day after both she and Astwood had scores of 76. Pauley won the third day gross prize with her 79.

Astwood, not allowed to win more than one daily gross award, also had a 79.

Betty Annert of Ocean Reef, who plays off a 12 handicap, won the low net division with a three-round score of 207. On the second day Astwood and Judy Kitson had net scores of 70 with Glenda Todd shooting a 71.

On day three Astwood, Pat Morgan and Katyna Rabain all shot net 73s.
