initiatives for local treatment professionals, on the weekend.

The first course, an introductory workshop on programme evaluation, was held at the Bermuda College.

The course is being headed by Dr. Alan Charles Ogborne, who is currently the senior scientist at the Programmes and Services Evaluation Research Centre of the Addiction Research Foundation in London, Ontario. Dr. Ogborne has tailored his presentation to suit the needs of Bermudian addiction professionals.

The majority of Dr. Ogborne's time is given over to the evaluation of addiction services and systems, and related training systems.

The National Drug Commission has among its major functions the treatment, rehabilitation and prevention of drug use and abuse, and is tasked to provide training assistance for those who wish to pursue courses in basic advanced training relating to drug abuse.

The Commission is in the process of organising a number of education and training events throughout 1997, of which Dr. Ogborne's presentation is the first.

Among the topics being considered for subsequent workshops and seminars later in the year are an introduction to assessment and case management, the accreditation of programmes, youth and adolescents, and ethical practice in the field of addictions.
