The Bank of Bermuda has won a court judgment of nearly $100,000 against a Court Street merchant.

The judgment of $99,023.46 against Mr. Annon McField Adams was awarded to the bank by the Supreme Court on Monday, records show.

Mr. Adams, who prefers to be called Abu-Ben Annon, has operated the A & J Variety Store at 40 Court Street for 30 years.

But the longtime merchant has said that business has not been good lately and has attributed some of his financial woes to a decision he made last year to stop selling cigarettes, cigarette papers, or matches in his store.

Because of the problems drugs have caused, particularly in the black community, Mr. Adams has called for supermarkets to be banned from selling alcohol.

Mr. Adams' store was open yesterday, but he was not working, and could not be reached for comment.
