St. George's feel left out

All-Stars into the preliminary round of the FA Cup after the Commercial Division team was left out of the competition.

"We're in the process of trying to re-schedule in order to get St. George's into the FA Cup,'' BFA General Secretary David Sabir said yesterday after confirming the oversight.

Members of the club were quite concerned to learn that they had been left out, having gotten what they thought was a bye in the elimination round last weekend. But yesterday a relieved All-Stars secretary Stephen Paynter was assured by Sabir that the team would participate in the FA Cup.

"We are relieved about that, most definitely,'' said Paynter who said that the club had paid its fees to participate in the competition.

The FA Cup is the only competition where First, Second and Commercial Division teams all compete together and it is known to produce shock results in the earlier rounds especially which involve the Second and Commercial Division teams before the First Division clubs come in in the first round.

Last year in the elimination round the All-Stars were beaten just 1-0 by Second Division champions Devonshire Cougars, though in the past they have beaten both BAA and Port Royal of the Second Division.

"Realistically we know we can only go so far but it would be nice to know we're participating in that prestigious competition with the chance of knocking down one of the giants,'' said Paynter.

"I can go back to one of our best runs when we played Somerset and that was a big occasion for us. They warmed us, mind you, 6-1 after we were leading 1-0 when Cal Rayner scored.

"We felt on top of the world and soon after Dennis Brown got sent off and we thought we had it. We gave Devonshire Cougars a good run last year and also beat BAA early in our existence.'' Six preliminary round matches are to be held on November 13 from which the six winners would join the 10 First Division team for the first round draw.

However, with St. George's All-Stars going into the draw it will likely require an additional match to eliminate the odd team.
