BBSR board member named to US science panel

appointed by US president Bill Clinton to serve on one of America's most prestigious scientific panels.

Dr. Warren M. Washington will serve on the National Science Board (NSB) which helps set the direction and policy for all US science agencies.

He joined the BBSR board in 1998 and is reputed to be an outstanding scientist in the field of climatic and atmospheric change research.

He is a senior scientist and head of the Climatic Change for Research Section at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado.

BBSR director of development Pat Hagan said yesterday: "His appointment really points to the importance of climate change research and to the kind of work we do in Bermuda.'' The NSB oversees the funding of agencies such as the National Science Foundation, which partly funds BBSR.

Dr. Washington is also a member of the BBSR Scientific Advisory Committee which measures oceanic and atmospheric change to understand global warming.
