The New York couple were rescued by fellow beachgoers around 1.45 p.m. when first the man, then the woman -- who went out to assist him -- could not get back to shore.

Emergency medical technicians from King Edward VII Memorial Hospital gave first aid at the scene before taking the couple to the hospital.
