Medical conference postponed

An ambitious medical symposium planned for July has been put back a year due to lack of sponsorship — but its US organisers are determined to go ahead with a public forum. The international conference on breast cancer, which would have brought 120 doctors to the Island to launch a series of medical conferences here, is now set for 2014, organiser Bill Keegan told The Royal Gazette. However, a public forum called the Pink Conference on Breast Cancer remains set for July 9 at Hamilton’s City Hall, with eight overseas speakers to attend.Part of the difficulty was that Bermuda has “fallen off the radar” for would-be sponsors within the pharmaceutical industry, the Innovative Medical Conferences head said.“Bermuda hasn’t hosted medical conferences really since about 1993,” Mr Keegan added, saying medical sponsors such as Bayer seemed unsure of whether the Island qualified as North America, European or Caribbean.“When we approached the London pharmaceutical offices we were informed the Bermuda was characterised as a Caribbean account,” he said. “We are in the process of working with the pharmaceutical companies to define Bermuda’s standing within the pharmaceutical for IMC next year’s conference.”Aside from the open forum at City Hall, the group plans to have their panel give an open course on the treatment and prevention of breast cancer at King Edward VII Memorial on July 10.“Innovative Medical Conferences remains committed to our mission to make Bermuda a centre for medical conferences,” Mr Keegan added.
