The woman, who was 18 years old at the time of the alleged incident, claims she was raped by the 23-year-old man two years ago on Whale Bay beach in Southampton.

Yesterday the woman told Supreme Court that after speaking to the man on the phone he came to visit. She said she got into his car to talk, and he drove off.

Defence lawyer Mr. Phil Perinchief asked the woman why she got into the car.

She said she was just going to talk with him. She hadn't intended on going anywhere with him.

When Mr. Perinchief asked why she didn't tell him to take her back home when he asked where she wanted to go, she said: "Why would I say that.'' He also asked her why she had changed her mind after telling the defendant it was too late for him to visit. She said it was because he sounded upset.

However, when he arrived at the house she admitted she never asked him what he was upset about.

The woman also said that before getting to the spot where the alleged rape took place the defendant had helped her over the rocks.

Mr. Perinchief said: "Here we have the defendant helping you along the rocks, then suddenly like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde he transforms into a person that rapes you.

"I am suggesting to you that guilty feelings about your boyfriend came over you while you were having sex with the defendant and you told him to stop, which he did.

"You asked him if he would leave his girlfriend for you and when he said `no' you got annoyed at him.'' The woman denied the accusation.

After the alleged rape, back in the parking lot, the woman admitted another car drove up. Mr. Perinchief asked her if at that time she took the opportunity to call out for help.

"Why didn't you call out to the occupant of the car and tell them you had been raped,'' he asked. "I couldn't say anything,'' she said.

He added: "After leaving the beach, the defendant stopped for a few minutes.

Neither one of you were in a rush to get home.'' The woman said: "I didn't care how fast it took him to get me home as long as he did.'' Mr. Perinchief asked: "You didn't care how long it took for a man who raped you to take you home? "I am suggesting that you concocted the story about rape to explain why you were out so late.

"You were sneaking off weren't you? You didn't tell anyone you left.'' The complainant broke down again. Mr. Perinchief added: "When you feel guilty you cry.'' The trial continues today.
