Anderson, of Old Maid's Lane, is already serving time for the non-payment of an earlier fine.

He appeared in Magistrates' Court yesterday to plead guilty to stealing a pair of sunglasses and a carrot and to public drinking in St. George's on June 7.

He told Acting Senior Magistrate Edward King: "I will definitely straighten up. I am not going to get in any more trouble.'' However Anderson said he had the top on the bottle when Police caught him and asked the court: "How can you say I was drinking? I would like to know?'' Mr.

King said: "You are something of a hopeless case. Prison is not the answer.

You don't have any money. You don't work and you can't pay court fines.'' Anderson was given a jail term concurrent with his present sentence which runs until June 27.
