Murder suspect to face trial in shooting of Bermudian

Accused murderer Mark Lorenzo Squires will be tried on August 9 in Augusta, Georgia, for the shooting of a Bermudian man and two other people.

Regardless of the outcome, Squires will be tried in North Carolina on unrelated murder charges where he faces the death penalty.

He is undergoing psychological evaluation for a probable defence of "temporary insanity'' in the November 13, 1995, shooting of Lyndon Fubler, Sheila Kitchens, and her 13-year-old brother.

Mr. Fubler, a student at Augusta College, was visiting Ms Kitchens when Squires and Daniel Downing are believed to have opened fire.

In Georgia, Squires faces three kidnapping and three aggravated assault charges and one count each of possession of a firearm and burglary in the commission of an assault.

If he is convicted, State prosecutors will press for a sentence of between 75 to 100 years in prison.

In North Carolina, he faces three homicide charges and faces the death penalty by lethal injection.
