today's second round of the Bermuda Men's Amateur Match Play Championships.

Eight golfers will not advance past the round of 16 and into the quarter-finals at Mid Ocean Club tomorrow -- including some of those who ordinarily might be in the running for Saturday's championship flight final.

Robert Vallis and Bill Pitt, for instance, won opening-round matches yesterday but meet each other today. Likewise on the other side of the draw, three-time champion Joel Hirsch must tangle with Tim Carr.

Carr and Pitt were members of the Bermuda team that competed at the World Championships in the Phillipines last fall.

Vallis, probably the Island's top amateur, defeated Scotsman Scott Foster 5 and 4 yesterday while Pitt got by Jack Wahl one-up. Carr beat Austin Eaton 2 and 1 while Hirsch was a 6 and 5 winner over Barrett Lightbourn.

Other intriguing matches today see former US Walker Cup member Doug Ballenger against Canada's Rory Scrymgeour; Alan Anderson against Mark Dupuy and John Liddell against Zane DeSilva.

Joel Hirsch is not a former member of the US Walker Cup team, as reported in yesterday's Royal Gazette .

BIG MATCH -- The field for the Bermuda Amateur Match Play Championships will be reduced by at least one contender today. Joel Hirsch (right) and Tim Carr won their first-round matches yesterday and will meet each other today at Mid Ocean Club. Quarter-finals are tomorrow.
