Sean Albert Eugene Smith, 22, of St. Augustine Lane, pleaded guilty to two charges of snatching tourists' bags, taking a Wheels Rental bike and possessing 4.05 grams of cannabis.

Senior Magistrate Will Francis sentenced him to perform 100 hours of community service and to serve probation for 18 months.

Smith was erecting a Rent-It-All tent at Castle Harbour Marriott on October 12 when he and co-worker Clyde Ian Saltus, who was charged separately, stole a set of keys from a bike in the rental shop.

When they returned to the resort to erect a second tent they removed the cycle worth $1,200.

Five days later they used it to steal bags off tourists driving mopeds. Police arrested the two the same day, and they admitted committing the thefts "for the excitement''.

And yesterday in Magistrate's Court Matthew Harper was fined a total of $300 after pleading guilty to two counts of possessing drugs equipment, including a selection of pipes, filters and cigarette papers.

Harper shipped two parcels to his home address on Middle Road while in college in Orlando in October. The package was intercepted and examined by customs officers. Two days later Police searched Harper's home, which he shares with his mother Debbie, and discovered more drugs equipment.

SEX TRIAL DELAYED CTS Sex trial delayed A suspected sex attacker had his trial postponed yesterday -- because his alleged victim was away on holiday.

The man accused of serious sexual assault, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was freed on bail by Puisne Judge Norma Wade Miller.

Prosecutors claim the defendant, a 25-year-old from Sandys Parish, attacked a 24-year-old woman on June 16 this year.

But the woman, who cannot be identified, was in Jamaica when the trial was originally due to start on Monday. Officials in the Attorney General's Chambers failed with a bid to fly her back to Bermuda on Monday night, so the trial could get underway yesterday.

Crown Counsel Peter Eccles said the complainant was due back on the Island on Saturday.

Mr. Eccles added: "It's not just the Crown who are injured here. The people of Bermuda are injured in a situation such as this.''
