Previously the moat was filled with "stagnant and filthy water'', making it the perfect mosquito breeding ground, a St. George's resident claimed.

He added that it had only been cleaned recently after being neglected for months and could be better utilised if it were a goldfish pond or a garden.

However, Corporation of St.George's secretary Nancy Hooper told The Royal Gazette that she was unaware of a problem with the moat.

She added that the Corporation was currently concentrating on having the badly tarnished statue restored.

"Our maintenance people would be responsible for checking the statue and moat and I've never heard anything like that,'' she said.

After looking further into the matter, Mrs. Hooper said:"I spoke with the administrative supervisor in charge and he said that they clean it all the time.
