Areas affected included parts of Southampton and Paget, Flatts and most of Warwick.

A Bermuda Electric Light Company spokesman said the blackouts occurred at 6.45 p.m. Power was restored in about 30 minutes, except for one area of Flatts.

The spokesman blamed the problem on a "mechanical fault'', adding: "I don't know what instigated it.''
