Magistrate condemns drug dealer
on people addicted to "deadly substances.'' Llewellyn Douglas, 38, of Curving Avenue, Pembroke, was jailed for two years and three months. Sentencing him, Acting Magistrate the Wor. Cheryl Mapp said: "This court must take a firm stand with respect to people who try to supply controlled substances to other people in this community.
"It's people such as you who keep the drug trade alive. You are preying upon other people with an addiction to deadly substances.'' Douglas had previousaly admitted possessing crack cocaine with intent to supply on March 25, 1991, possessing drug equipment on the same date, possessing diamorphine on December 3, and causing grievous bodily harm to Royston Anthony Place at the Spinning Wheel night club on October 3. Douglas claimed Place owed him money.
The case resumed yesterday after a social inquiry report was prepared.
Miss Patricia Harvey, defending, said Douglas had cooperated with the Police.
"It was one of the fullest types of cooperations I have seen in my career,'' she said. "As they say, he was singing like a bird.'' Douglas had opened his soul to her, she said. "He came into my office a very troubled man. The only thing he didn't do was to cry.'' But Ms Mapp told Douglas: "These are very serious charges and you have a history which reflects you have been engaged in this activity before. You say you chose this way of life in order to help your family, but this is not the way to beat the recession.''
