Fredina ready to give something back

crash in Atlanta last year, ended her career, is about to realise her dreams of opening a gymnastics school.

The school, to be known as Step By Step, will open on September 19 and is designed to cater to children between the young age of four and up to 16, teaching them the basics of gymnastics. "Hopefully we can get some gymnasts good enough to go to college or the Olympics,'' said Bean-Slaton. "There's a lot of talent here.'' A former student of Warwick Secondary, Bean-Slaton will use the facility at Warwick Secondary on Saturday for the first few months until she can find something more permanent.

"This is something I've always wanted to do but because of school and other sacrifices it hasn't been until now that I'm able to open the school up,'' said Bean-Slaton, who attended Georgia College on a gymnastics scholarship before moving on to Clark University where she obtained a degree in Administration and Management.

"I started at 10 or 11, which was real late, so it's surprising I could make it to the college level.'' Bean-Slaton was hospitalised for about two months with knee, chest and eye injuries from the March 1991 accident, which killed the other driver who had fallen asleep before crashing head-on into Bean-Slaton's car near her home in east Atlanta. She has made virtually a full recovery.

Registration for the classes will be held the next three Saturdays between 9 and 11 a.m. at Warwick Secondary. For further information, Bean-Slaton can be contacted at 234-3878 evenings.
