CHESS CHS Shimon Alkon successfully retained his senior title and Gilbert Institute's Ian Osteriff snatched the junior category at Saturday's Bermuda Schools Open Chess Championships.
Thirty-five youngsters took part in the weekend tournament but with only three in the senior ranks it was almost a walkover for 16-year-old Saltus student Alkon.
However, making up for this loss was an abundance of exciting play in the lower bracket.
Returning champion Daniel Miller was beaten in the first round by Andrew Simons and never recovered.
Meanwhile, Osteriff and Berkeley's Andrew Simons were the only players to emerge with maximum points from four rounds in the division.
And in a thrilling final that saw some fine attacking play, Osteriff got the better of Simons to take the championship.
Prizes were presented at the end by Harry Kast with special awards going to the following: Adam Birch (West Pembroke), four points -- 11-year-old category Rory Manuel (Saltus), four points -- 10-year-old category Jay Butler (Gilbert Institute) and Graham Smith (Saltus), four points -- nine-year-old category David Roach (Saltus), three-and-a-half points -- eight-year-old category TENNIS TEN The Coral Beach and Tennis Club will be hosting its Annual Junior Open Tennis Championship starting from Saturday, December 19 running through Tuesday, December 22.
