Dodwell launches attack

tourism efforts yesterday, calling for the resignation of Minister David Allen and for more focus on the product rather than marketing.

Shadow Tourism Minister David Dodwell said the Minister had not shown a clear plan of action on where he was planning to take Bermuda's hotel, airline or entertainment industries in the near future.

And he added that the number one challenge for the industry was to make it desirable for young Bemurmudians to join in later life.

"Look at Stonington Beach -- they've only got around 70 students learning the business there,'' Mr. Dodwell said. "But its not their fault. It's our fault for not involving our youngsters in tourism and making them want to get into it.'' He urged Government to implement in schools a tourism curriculum that the UBP came up with while it was still in power.

Another one of his suggestions was that a tourism authority be set up, involving personnel from all sectors of the industry.

"Government can't do it alone,'' he said. "We have to have a way to move forward quickly and this will reduce the bureaucracy and make dealing with tourism a lot more efficient.'' Mr. Dodwell also attacked Government's current cruise ship policy, saying that it was hotel rooms that needed to be filled.

He added that instead of marketing Bermuda in magazines and on television, the tourism ministry should bring itself up to date into the digital age, focusing more on internet publicity and affiliations.
