The Pembroke man made the unusual promise after pleading guilty to obstructing Police in the course of carrying out their duty in the plea session of Magistrates' Court yesterday.

The court heard Police noticed Hanely walking away from another man while they were carrying out an investigation on the junction of Court and Elliott Street in early March.

As an officer approached him, Hanley was seen placing a "small brown twist" in his mouth and swallowing. Hanely had been convicted for obstruction in January, 1999.

Acting Senior Magistrate Edward King imposed a $300 fine, saying: "In sentencing I take into consideration your guilty plea. You are, however, a repeat offender. If you come back, you are going to Westgate. This is the second time.'' Mr. Hanely replied : "I've got a couple more left this year.''
