Two sergeants and 12 constables detached from their regular duties began operating radars at various locations around the Island on September 3 to put a stop to the general deterioration of driving standards on the roads, said spokesman Gary Venning.

As of September 23, they had caught 588 speeders -- several of whom were travelling in excess of 80 kph.

A further 127 people were arrested for other traffic violations including dangerous driving and licensing offences.

P.c. Venning said Commissioner Colin Coxall was committed to improving the standard of driving on the roads and will continue with the crackdown.
