an 80-year-old Paget woman was remanded in custody yesterday after causing a ruckus in Magistrates' Court.

Senior Magistrate Will Francis asked the man to stand so that the indictable charges could be read out to him in court.

The man, who cannot be identified, refused, saying: "I'm guilty, I'm guilty man, okay, why I gotta stand?'' Mr. Francis waited a few moments in silence before suggesting that lawyer Mark Pettingill speak with his client.

The man then stood while Mr. Francis read off the charges. But he interrupted the Senior Magistrate several times saying, "guilty, guilty''.

Mr. Francis told the 41-year-old man: "You will not be tried in this court, so you needn't bother to tell me whether you're guilty or not.'' He was remanded in custody until his next court appearance for mention on July 11.
