a student attack on principal Melvyn Bassett.

Board chairman Eugene Cox yesterday said the attack was discussed at a regular meeting of the board on Thursday night.

He reserved comment on the meeting until the review was completed.

Mr. Bassett was attacked by Kiwon Butterfield at the school's graduation ball at Sonesta Beach Hotel on June 29.

Mr. Butterfield punched Mr. Bassett -- in front of a room full of parents, teachers, and relatives of Sandys Secondary graduates -- after his name was not called during the ceremony. The attack was captured on videotape.

It is understood that Mr. Bassett and the student's mother had agreed that the student would only be allowed to take part in the ceremony if he had his dreadlocks covered as was the school policy.

But Mr. Butterfield, who had received his graduation certificate with other graduates at the school earlier that week, showed up at the graduation ceremony with his dreadlocks uncovered.

When his name was not called he marched up on stage, where Mr. Bassett was sitting, demanded to know why his name was not called and punched Mr. Bassett.
