content of letters which appear on this page. Many letter writers are trying to get across their point of view. Not every letter writer tells the whole truth or even part of the truth. Some letter writers attempt to confuse us and some to delude us. Very few letters are without a slant or free from prejudice.

Some paint Bermuda as an oppressive Third World country. If you did not know better, you could be led to believe by some writers that Bermudians are the worst done by people in this hemisphere. Some say we have all been poorly educated by an uncaring system. Our legal system, some say, is still in the oppressive Middle Ages. They tell us that we are all poorly housed and we are all in danger of being evicted tomorrow. Allegedly we are a Godless people with hardly a caring soul among us. Bermuda is a bad, bad place to live...

Tell the lies often enough and some people will believe them and we are sure that there are people who have come to believe that Bermuda is kin to a slum without a soul. Those people do not look around them nor do they count their blessings.

One letter writer recently complained that Haiti has a better sports stadium than Bermuda. There appeared to be an implication that Bermuda was not even up to the standards of the poorest of the poor. The writer did not bother to mention that Bermuda has a huge sports complex being constructed right now at Prospect. There was no declaration that Haiti's stadium was built by a cruel dictator using money which would have been better used feeding Haiti's hungry children. Haiti may have a stadium but it has little running water. Its people risk their lives daily to escape grinding poverty. The majority of Haiti's people live in shacks and it was until recently widely recognised as the poorest country in this hemisphere. It has not gotten much richer lately nor have conditions improved very much but it has been replaced at the bottom of the poorest country list by Jamaica because Jamaica's economy has been shrinking each year.

Maybe Haiti's stadium is better than Bermuda's but we doubt that it will be better than our new complex. Then too let us remember that the welfare of the people comes first in Bermuda. Bermuda's children are well fed AND we are getting a new sports complex for both competition and recreation.

During Election '98 let's think about the things people say rather than swallow them "hook, line and sinker''. Not everyone has the interests of all the people at heart.
